This classic flannel Cincinnati Reds road uniform including gray jersey and gray pants was worn by pitcher Willard Schmidt near the end of his career. Willard was a relief pitcher for seven seasons in the Majors five with St. Louis and his last two with Cincinnati finishing 31-29 overall with a 3.93 ERA over 586 career innings. 1958 was one of his best years as his ERA was a stingy 2.86. The #44 gray Reds jersey made by MacGregor is a size 44 tank-top button-down tagged 'Set 1 1959' inside the shirttail with '44 and 'C' in red across the chest and a large '44' on the back. It shows good wear yet comes in immaculate condition with no tears or holes to be found. The buttons are all in excellent shape and there is little if any fraying or pilling to the fabric. The pants(presumably MacGregor as manufacturer's tag is missing) are tagged 'Set 1 1958' inside top front button with '7 36 22' tagged inside back waistline. Shows excellent wear especially internally where there are several mysterious red stains (blood perhaps?) on the inside pockets. The stitching is starting to wear out and there is fraying to the red-striped fabric running down the side of the left leg. All buttons are intact. Overall the pants remain in great condition shape considering their age. It's likely that Willard wore this pair both in 1959 and 1958 when the franchise was called the Cincinnati Redlegs.

These items are part of the Tom Giordano collection. Giordano started his 66 year career in organized baseball with the Philadelphia Athletics organization in 1948. After toiling in the minors for a few years the 2nd baseman known as "T-Bone" was called up to the big club at the end of the 1953 season. He batted .175 and hit 2 home runs with 5 RBI in 40 at bats. He returned to the minors as a manager in the Braves and Athletics farm systems from 1956-59 before landing a scouting role with the Kansas City A's in 1960. He would later scout for the Cincinnati Reds Cleveland Indians Seattle Pilots/Milwaukee Brewers (where he also spent one season as a Pilots minor league manager) Montreal Expos and Baltimore Orioles where he served as Director of Scouting from 1976-1987. Since then he has held similar senior executive roles with the Indians and Texas Rangers. In 2007 Giordano was named East Coast Scout of the Year.
