Presented here is an extremely scarce participation medal issued for the equestrian events held in Stockholmfor the Melbourne 1956 Summer Olympic Games. Dueto Australian agricultural quarantine regulations the equestrian eventsof the XVI Olympiad were held five months earlier in Stockholm Swedenmaking the 1956 Summer Games the second Olympics not to be heldentirely in one country. The first were the 1920 Antwerp Games which were co-hosted by Amsterdam and Osten. Research indicates that only 158 equestrian athletes participated and it is believed that less than 200 of these medals were struck making Stockholmparticipation medals among the rarest and most-coveted for esteemed Olympic collectors.

Made of bronze with an oval shape the medal measures 50 mm tall 42 mm wide and 2 mm thick weighing 40 grams. Designed byJohn Sjosvard and inspired by a sculpture in the Parthenon the obverse shows an ancient Greek horseman riding left over aplatform with the Olympic rings below. Surrounding the rim is “XVI Olympiadens RyttartavlingarStockholm 1956" with some minor green patina at the top. The reverse is blank. Overall it presents Near Mint. What a find!
