This photo captures one of the most dramatic moments of World Series history: “The Catch.” The action took place at the Polo Grounds during the opening game of the 1954 World Series between the New York Giants and the Cleveland Indians. In the top of the eighth inning with the score knotted at 2-2, a walk and a single put two Cleveland runners on the bases with no outs. Vic Wertz then hit a booming fly ball to the deepest part of the Polo Grounds outfield. The Indians’ runners raced around the bases for what looked like a sure two-run extra-base hit. However, centerfielder Willie Mays sped towards the outfield wall with his back to the plate, then, as if he had eyes in the back of his head, turned at the right moment and made a perfect over-the-shoulder catch. What happened next is even more impressive than the catch — Mays spun in one motion and fired the ball to second base, his quick action holding the lead runner to third base instead of scoring a run. The Giants got out of the inning without giving up any runs and went on to win the game 5-2 in extra innings. The Type II photo features wide white borders, with a light discoloration in the lower right area. The reverse has the United Press International credit stamp and several handwritten notations. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type II Authentic.
