Most ballplayers would give their right arm for what was just a regular season for Stan Musial. To quote Bob Costas, “He didn’t hit a homer in his last at-bat; he hit a single. He didn’t hit in 56 straight games. He married his high school sweetheart and stayed married to her. … All Musial represents is more than two decades of sustained excellence and complete decency as a human being.” The 1954 season, to which this portrait dates, was a case in point: “The Man” hit his usual solid .330 and led the league in doubles and runs scored. The Type 1 photo features a warm, sepia tone throughout. The reverse has the William Jacobellis credit stamp. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
