After seven frustrating tries that gave birth to the fans’ lament of “wait ‘til next year,” the Brooklyn Dodgers finally won a World Series in 1955. Powered by the pitching of Don Newcombe, Carl Erskine, and Johnny Podres and the bats of Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, and Roy Campanella, the “Boys of Summer” beat the New York Yankees in a dramatic seven-game World Series. This amazing Type III photograph depicts that triumphant team. Every one of the 1955 World Champions is posed on the field in Ebbets Field. Roy Campanella, arms crossed, stares toughly into the distance, Duke Snider can hide the childish grin of a kid who finally won the big prize, and Carl Furillo’s face shows the wry smile of a guy who finally beat the dreaded Yankees. A wet-behind-the-ears rookie by the name of Sandy Koufax is found in the middle row, and standing at the back right and towering over the rest of the team is the stoic visage of Jackie Robinson. The photo has been printed with a large white border and a key to the players depicted at the bottom. The reverse has a stain in the lower right corner and is free of any stamps or writing.
