Slater Martin was an outstanding point guard and vitalmember of five different NBA championship teams during the 1950s. Standing just 5’ 10” tall he competed in seven straight NBA All-Star Games from 1953 through ’59 and helped both the Minneapolis Lakers and St. Louis Hawks win team titles. He remains the only University of Texas alumni ever inducted into the NaismithMemorial Basketball Hall of Fame (1982). This lot features Martin’s 1954 NBA Western Conference All-Star Game worn shorts when he represented the Minneapolis Lakers. The game would mark Martin’s second All-Star appearance as the then-28-year-old playmaker contributed two points and three assists over 23 minutes in the West’s98-93 defeat at the hands of the East squad which was led by Boston’s Bob Cousy: 20 points 11 rebounds and four assists.
The blue satin shorts have red white and blue trim around the waist and red and white trim down the sides and leg openings. On the inside rear waistband resides a white and black "Horace Partridge Athletic Goods 34" tag to indicate manufacturer and size. Martinautographed the shorts in black fine-point marker just to the right of the manufacturer’s tag. A sewn-in blue satin belt stretching 10” across the front exists with a still functional silver buckle. The shorts exhibit excellent wear and comes directly from the renowned “Lakers Shrine” collection of SCP Auctions President David Kohler.
