This incredible lot features two pairs of early 1960's Jerry West game-worn items from his younger years as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers. When the Lakers moved from Minneapolis to L.A. in 1960 they changed their logo along with their uniform colors going from powder blue and yellow trim to dark blue and white trim. This style lasted until 1966 when they adopted the gold and purple color scheme that is still utilized today. Jerry West the fresh-faced 6’ 2” 175-lb. shooting guard out of West Virginia University first put on the Lakers uniform during his 1960-61 rookie season. He sported this rare road style of trunks sometime during his first few NBA seasons. After a stellar rookie campaign in which he averaged 17.6 ppg West turned it up to over 30 points per contest in three of his next five seasons. The legend of “Mr. Clutch” and “The Logo” was born.
The blue button-up shorts made of a thick and durable fabric have white panels on each side emblazoned with “LAKERS” in blue tackle twill. The side panels are trimmed with a dual powder blue white and navy piping pattern reminiscent of the franchise’s Minneapolis era. A white fabric belt is built into the waistline and fastens with a silver metallic belt buckle giving the trunks a vintage hardcourt look. “44 WEST” is written in red marker inside the rear pocket flap. There is no manufacturer’s tag or size label. The trunks exhibit excellent evidence of wear with stretching sweat staining and some reddish/brownish spot stains. The accompanying blue and white striped stirrup-style socks round out the lot.
All items originate from the personal collection of former Lakers trainer Frank O’Neil who served the team proudly from 1960-74. O’Neil passed away in 2010 at the age of 81. The shorts have been part of SCP Auctions Founder and President David Kohler's world-renowned "Lakers Shrine" Collection for several years.
