The late Slater Martin was a terrific point guard and vital member of five different NBA championship teams during the 1950s. A versatile playmaker at just 5’ 10” tall he competed in seven straight NBA All-Star Games from 1953 through ’59 and helped both the Minneapolis Lakers and St. Louis Hawks win team titles. He remains the only University of Texas alumni ever inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame (1982). This lot features Martin’s 1959 NBA All-Star Game worn jersey when he represented the St. Louis Hawks as a member of the Western Conference squad. The game would mark Martin’s final All-Star appearance as the 33-year-old standout would retire at the end of the season. He contributed five points and six rebounds over 22 minutes of play to help the West emerge victorious 124-108.
The white jersey (size 38) includes proper Rawlings manufacturer’s tagging on the inside rear tail accompanied by a washing instructions tag. The front jersey reads “WEST” in blue tackle twill numerals sewn directly onto the jersey with Martin’s uniform number “22” positioned just below it in similar tackle twill fashion. A total of five (5) red tackle twill stars are positioned on the jersey front. The back of the jersey simply includes Martin’s uniform number “22” in blue tackle twill numbers that stretch 7.5” tall. Elastic blue-and-white trim can be found on the jersey’s collar and sleeves. The jersey shows moderate use with noticeable puckering and some slight fraying of the numbers and letters present. It is a memorable reminder of what life and uniforms were like in the early days of the NBA. The jersey comes from the renowned “Lakers Shrine” collection of SCP Auctions President David Kohler who acquired it directly from Martin’s family several years ago.
Includes LOA from Slater Martin’s son. Letter from MEARS with perfect A10 grade.
