Manuel Francisco dos Santos, known as Garrincha (wren in Portuguese), is widely regarded as one of the two or three greatest Brazilian footballers of all time. Only Pelé ranks safely ahead of him among those who have ever worn the Canarinho. The right winger and striker played professionally from 1953 to ‘72 and was a fixture on the Brazil National Team for over a decade from 1955 to ‘66. Garrincha led Brazil to back-to-back World Cups in 1958 and '62, putting his Seleção teammates on his back without an injured Pelé during the latter title run for which he earned Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

Called “Alegria do Povo” (People’s Joy) by his beloved fans, it was his other nickname – “Anjo das Pernas Tortas” (Angel with Bent Legs) – that made him a legend. Garrincha turned his physical deformity of a crooked spine and severely bowed legs into a paradoxical advantage on the pitch that allowed him to move unpredictably and become one of the most talented dribblers ever.

This 1953-55 era Botafogo match-worn jersey is among the earliest and most significant pieces of Garrincha’s legacy, dating to his first few seasons with the famed Brazilian Série A club as a barely legal adult. The black and white vertically striped shirt has long been the club’s traditional home style, displaying the patented Botafogo star-on-shield crest. His number “7” appears on the back in solid black, which allows us to date it to 1953-55. A Garrincha autograph is especially rare since he died at the age of 49, and yet he has added his signature (authenticated by PSA/DNA) next to the back number in black ink.

The shirt carries extraordinary evidence of match use with scattered fabric tears and holes, heavy soiling and sweating, and an overall battle-worn character that only genuine competition could produce. Garrincha spent 13 seasons years at Botafogo (1953-65) where he netted 84 goals in 238 matches for the Rio de Janeiro club, yet his gamers from this tenure are virtually nonexistent in the auction market. The last one sold for £5,000 ($7,813) back in 2011.

Authentication & Provenance

Letters of Authenticity from MEARS for the jersey and PSA/DNA for the autograph. Letter of provenance from Garrincha's daughter as well, tracing this shirt directly to his estate and personal collection.
