Very nice group of Olympic items issued to the same athletic participant at the 1948 London Olympic Games: none other than American gold medalist rower Lloyd Butler. The first piece is his official participation medal. Made of bronze minted by J. Pinches (England) and designed by B. Mackennal/ J. Pinches it measures 50mm in diameter and 3mm thick and weighs 60 grams. Obverse depicts city view of Londonover legend in three lines with "XIV OLYMPIAD LONDON 1948" in raisedlettering and Olympic rings below. Reverse shows quadriga with triumphantwinner dashing (same design as 1908) with tiny "BM" stamped at bottom. Presents EF.
The second piece is an official athlete participant's lapel badge. Made of an alloy metaland measuring 48mm tall and 32mm wide it features London’s Big Ben and reads “XIV OLYMPIAD LONDON 1948” along with the Olympic rings. The original purple (presumably the color for rowing) silk ribbon is present although soiled and torn at bottom. The pin back on the reverse is perfectly intact. Presents EX-MT overall.
A rare official U.S. Olympic Team belt buckle completes this unique trio. The buckle measures 2.5cm by 5cm and has “UNITED STATES OLYMPIC TEAM LONDON 1948” in an Art Deco typeface along with a red and blue painted U.S. Olympic Team shield logo. The reverse has “ZN ALLOY” and “HICKOK USA MASTER PLATE” stamped into the surface. A very collectible set of items issued to one of USA's stars at the 1948 London Games.
LOA from Butler family.
