Featured here is a special 1948 Award of Merit medallion presented by the "LOS ANGELES TIMES NATIONAL SPORTS AWARD" to "DEAN CROMWELL FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO 1948 OLYMPIC GAMES" - to quote the inscribed message on the back. This approx. 3 x 3 inch cast silver medallion has the design of an eagle over shield emblem with "LOS ANGELES AWARD OF MERIT" on the face. Beautifully crafted and designed and very-well preserved it comes in NM condition.
Known as "Maker of Champions" Dean Cromwell is perhaps the most decorated U.S. Track & Field coach ever. He coached at USC from 1909 to 1948 and guided the Trojans to 12 NCAA team titles and 34 individual NCAA titles. He was an assistant coach for U.S. Track & Field at the 1936 Berlin Summer Olympics before serving as head coach for the U.S. team at the 1948 Games in London. He passed away in 1962.
