Glenn Dobbs was one of the most versatile a football players ever. He starred in the All-America Football Conference (AAFC) from 1946-49 as a running back quarterback and punter. In 1946 he won the AAFC MVP for the Brooklyn Dodgers before playing for the Los Angeles Dons in 1948-49. This shiny bronzed shoe is the same one he wore during the 1948 season for the Dons. It is nicely mounted on a 13.5" x 5.25" rectangular wooden pedestal with a nameplate that reads the following: "SHOE WORN BY GLENN DOBBS - LOS ANGELES DONS - During The 1948 Season In Which He Punted 68 Times for An All-Time Major League Record Average - OF 49.1 YARDS." High-top design laces and spikes all well-preserved in the cast bronze finish.

A star tailback and punter at the University of Tulsa Dobbs was chosen by the Chicago Cardinals in the 1st round of the 1943 NFL draft (#3 overall) but went into the military instead. After starring in service football he joined the Brooklyn Dodgers of the new AAFC in 1946 a club that utilized a single-wing attack. Dobbs led the circuit in passing yards (1886) as well as punting (47.8 avg.) and was named league MVP. In 1947 Dobbs was dealt to the Los Angeles Dons. Playing quarterback in the T-formation his performance suffered but in 48 a new head coach Jimmy Phelan created a new offense (the Phelan spread) in order to more fully utilize Dobbs talents. His 49.1 yard punting average still stands as an AAFC record.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
