It was just like old times on August 23, 1942, when Babe Ruth faced off against Walter Johnson for the final time. The two had a friendly rivalry dating back to the 1910s when Johnson was the best right-hander in the American League while Ruth was the best left-hander. In what may come as a surprise to modern baseball fans, it was Babe Ruth who was undefeated in eight starts against Johnson, with a record of 6-0 in their pitching face-offs. After the Babe transitioned to an outfielder, their hitter-pitcher rivalry saw the Big Train fanning Ruth 25 times in 113 at-bats and keeping the slugger to a modest 292 average and eight home runs. On this 1942 occasion, an old-timers exhibition game for the Army-Navy War Relief Fund, Ruth took Johnson deep one last time, belting a home run into the right field bleachers at Yankee Stadium.
