While Joe DiMaggio was taking all the headlines with his 56-game hitting streak, this Type 1 image depicts Ted Williams, who, at the same time, was quietly building a historic season that would make him the last man to hit over .400. A stringer for Acme Newspictures recognized the numbers the “The Kid” was racking up and snapped this candid locker room portrait. Williams did indeed defy the odds and hit .406 that year, making him the 26th and last player to reach that plateau. This Type 1 photo shows some wear to the white border, none of which intrudes into the image. The reverse has the Acme Newsphotos stamp and the original caption slug. This wonderful portrait has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
