A visually striking example of one of the hobby's most celebrated rookie-era rarities: the 1939 Play Ball #92 Ted Williams, offered here in its rare Sample variant and authenticated by PSA. The front presents the same iconic black-and-white photograph found on the standard issue, a young "Teddy Ballgame" captured mid-follow-through in his Boston road uniform, bat cocked over his shoulder in the batting stance that would become one of the most studied swings in baseball history.

The reverse is where this card distinguishes itself: bold red diagonal overprints reading "SAMPLE," "FREE," and promotional copy directing dealers to order details, distinguishing it from the card actually sold to the public in wax packs. Card stock and printing otherwise mirror the standard #92, complete with Williams' biography, born San Diego, October 30, 1918, and his standout 1937 San Diego Padres (PCL) statistics referenced in the write-up.

Sample cards were distributed to Gum, Inc. salesmen and retailers to solicit orders ahead of the set's release and survive in far smaller quantities than their production counterparts, with PSA noting this as one of the scarcer Play Ball issues in any form.
