Presented here is a pin that was given to legendary running back Kenny Washington a pioneering figure in the Civil Rights Movement who was credited with breaking the color barrier in the National Football League after a standout career in college at UCLA. Washington rushed for 1914 yards in his college career a school record for 34 years. He was one of four African American players on the 1939 UCLA Bruins football team the others being Woody Strode Jackie Robinson and Ray Bartlett. Washington Strode and Robinson starred on the 1939 UCLA Bruins football team in which they made up three of the four backfield players. This was a rarity to have so many African Americans when only a few dozen at all played on college football teams. They played eventual conference and national champion USC to a 0-0 tie with the 1940 Rose Bowl on the line.

He led the nation in total offense and became the first consensus All-American in the history of the school's football program in 1939. This 2-inch gold pin portrays a sculpted version of the Fairbanks Trophy on the front with Douglas Fairbanks Trophy in raised letters at the top and All Players All American at the bottom. On the reverse Washingtons name and position are engraved along with University of California at Los Angeles 1939 and the text Adjudged to be the Most Valuable Football Player in the United States. The pin is in basically as-issued and problem-free condition.

Comes with a Letter of Authenticity from the Helms/LA 84 Collection.
