Offered here is a pre-war football helmet game-worn in college by Marshall Goldberg who starred as a halfback and fullback at the University of Pittsburgh 1936-1938. Goldberg was a two-time consensus All-America selection (1937 & 1938) and played on two national championship teams (1936 & 1937) under head coach Jock Sutherland. He finished third in the Heisman Trophy voting in 1937 and was runner-up in 1938. He finished his Pitt Panthers career with the most rushing yards in school history until Tony Dorsett passed him in 1974. Goldberg went on to play 8 seasons in the NFL with the Chicago Cardinals. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1958.

The MacGregor rigid leather helmet painted in Pitt Panther yellow dates to the 1937-38 seasons. The exterior of the leather shell bears crossing panels and several holes for ventilation. Some yellow paint on the right side of the shell has scraped off to expose the brown leather. The interior has eight-point suspension padding. The chinstrap is missing. There are surface abrasions on the shell's sides and heavy wear-and-tear on the inside. Overall it shows tremendous wear and gridiron game use. This MacGregor helmet is one of the rarest and most desirable styles of the 1930s and 40s especially when it can be attributed to an All-American player from that era.

Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
