Owen P. Churchill was a leading figure in U.S. yachting circles for more than 50 years and team captain of the United States Olympic Yachting team at both the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games. He won gold at the 1932 Summer Games in Los Angeles. After a disappointing performance at the 1936 Olympics Churchill leased a Tahitian island for two years and was intrigued by the crudely fashioned fins which the natives used for diving. In 1940 he invented the first prototype swimming fin leading to the world's largest fin brand that bears his name today. These two plastic identification pins (numbered 5337 & 7658) served as badges for staff during the 1936 Berlin Summer Games. They were part of Churchill's personal collection that he donated among many other artifacts to the Helms Athletic Foundation. The gray and tan badges are 7cm in diameter with a pierced design of the Bradenberg Gate and Olympic rings. The pin backs are no longer intact.

Includes Letter of Provenance from Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
