A timeless and historically significant original Type I photograph capturing baseball’s two greatest legends — Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig — in one of their most iconic poses: shaking hands during Ruth’s final season as a player on March 17, 1935 at Spring Training.
This powerful image symbolizes the passing of the torch between two of the game’s most enduring figures. Taken near the end of Ruth’s storied career and as Gehrig continued to dominate the diamond, the photograph radiates mutual respect between the pair who defined the Yankees’ golden age and transformed baseball into America’s pastime.
Authenticated and encapsulated by PSA/DNA as a Type I, meaning it was developed directly from the original negative within approximately two years of the photo being taken. The image boasts outstanding clarity, tone, and depth — a striking testament to the artistry of 1930s baseball photography.
Original Type I examples of this famous handshake pose are exceedingly scarce and remain among the most sought-after images in all of baseball collecting.
