This 1921 W516-1 #27 Christy Mathewson strip card has been graded by Sportscard Guaranty (SGC) at the VG/EX level, assigned a numeric grade of 50 on SGC's 10-100 scale, equivalent to a traditional VG-EX 4. SGC's grading reflects a card with moderate edge and corner wear typical of early 1920s strip card issues, which were produced on thin, uncut stock and have a well-documented tendency toward soft corners and registration shift.

 

Mathewson, a charter member of the Baseball Hall of Fame's inaugural 1936 class, appears on this issue in a portrait pose typical of the W516 strip card format. SGC's encapsulation and grading provide third-party verification of both authenticity and condition for an issue that predates more standardized card production by over a decade, making even mid-grade examples like this one desirable to early-era baseball collectors.
