The handwritten pencil notation on the reverse of this Type 1 image says it all: The Peerless Matty warming up.” “Peerless” indeed;, when this photo was snapped in 1913. Christy Mathewson had won the pitching Triple Crown twice, led the NL in strikeouts five times, wins four times, and pitched his New York Giants to five pennants and a World Championship. 1913 was another pennant-winning season for the Giants, with Matty contributing 25 of their wins. The photo has been attributed to the World Series that fall against the Philadelphia Athletics. This photograph captures the Hall of Famer mid-windup before an overflowing crowd of World Series spectators. Matty would pitch two games in the series, and as he is wearing the Giants' road uniform, this photo would have been taken before Game 2. Mathewson pitched a 10-inning shutout gem, fanning five and giving up just eight hits. The Type 1 photo has been printed to its edge. There are several creases and flakes, but they do not detract from the display quality of this atmospheric photo. The photo has been encapsulated by PSA and graded a Type 1 Authentic.
