Offered here is a highly desirable 1915 D303 General Baking Co. Ty Cobb (Batting), graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. According to the population report at the time of cataloging, this card is one of just two examples at this grade with none graded higher, a remarkable condition rarity for a bakery issue that was distributed wrapped in loaves of bread and rarely survived in collectible shape. Cards from the D-series bakery issues are consistently among the scarcest of the prewar era, and Cobb is the most important subject of the set.

The front depicts the Detroit superstar in a classic batting pose, his bat cocked over his left shoulder as he stares toward the pitcher, set against a soft peach sky above a green field. He wears a Tigers uniform with the old English "D" on the chest. The caption in the lower border reads "Cobb, c.f. Detroit Americans." The reverse features the bold advertising text "Compliments of General Baking Co.," promoting Star Bread, French Bread and Little General Bread, and noting that the cards would be wrapped with the loaves until September 1st.

The card presents with good color and a pleasing, well-centered image, light surface soiling, a few scattered print specks and even softness to the corners. Ty Cobb set more than 90 records during his career and retired with a .366 lifetime batting average, still the highest in MLB history. An exceedingly tough Cobb issue in the highest PSA grade.
