The 1909 World Series pitted the National League Champion Pittsburgh Pirates against the A.L. Champion Detroit Tigers. Two prominent future Hall of Famers competing in this Fall Classic were Pirates’ shortstop Honus Wagner and Tigers’ right fielder Ty Cobb both members of Major League Baseball’s inaugural induction class in Cooperstown. In a hard-fought seven-game series the Pirates prevailed four games to three. The seventh and deciding game played on October 16 at Detroit’s Bennett Park turned out to be a lopsided contest as the Pirates shutout the Tigers 8-0 behind a complete game six-hitter thrown by right-hander Babe Adams. The game’s final out occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning when Adams got Detroit’s Davy Jones to fly out to left fielder Fred Clarke. Clarke who drew four walks and scored two runs that day not only managed to catch thefinal out baseball but held on to it and inscribed it for posterity.

This lot features that very baseball. The official American League (Ban Johnson) Reach baseball shows significant toning and includes not only Clarke’s signature in faded black ink but also a very long inscription hepenned describing the prized keepsake: “Last Ball in Play in Last Deciding Game Pittsburgh vs. Detroit Score 8-0 World Champion Ship Oct - 16 - 09.” The authentic baseball sports the red and blue stitching (now severely faded) and includes a smudged “Ban Johnson 1909” stamp on one panel. This item represents an incredible piece of professional baseball history from the sport's first World Series that lasted seven games with connections to two of the game’s greatest players ever.

Includes a full LOA from PSA/DNA.
