Offered here is a stunning 1909-11 T206 Walter Johnson Portrait with the scarce Cuban tobacco brand El Principe de Gales on the back, graded EX-MT 6 by PSA. At the time of this writing, this card sits among just three examples at this grade with none higher for the back variation, a population profile that places it in the highest echelon of surviving copies. Well-centered on the front with relatively clean borders and vibrant colors, the "Big Train" is depicted with outstanding facial registration. The back is super clean with bold red print. Soft corners and minor edge wear are all that prevent this gem from achieving high-grade status.
For advanced T206 collectors who pursue the Hall of Famers across the set's many advertising backs, opportunities to acquire a top-population example like this are few and far between. The front presents the young Washington Senators fireballer in a classic head-and-shoulders portrait against a warm golden background, his piercing blue eyes and ruddy complexion rendered beautifully in the lithographic style that makes T206 so beloved. He wears a white button-front jersey with the dark Washington ""W"" on the chest pocket and a dark collared sweater beneath. The colors are rich and vibrant, the image well focused and the white borders clean and bright, with the caption ""JOHNSON, WASHINGTON"" printed in the lower border.
The reverse bears the Spanish-language El Principe de Gales advertisement for cork tip Havana cigarettes in crisp red ink, framed by an ornate border and free of any staining or paper loss. Walter "The Big Train" Johnson won 417 games, the second most in baseball history, and his 110 career shutouts remain the all-time record more than a century later. He was one of the five original inductees into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. A condition-sensitive rarity of one of the game's greatest pitchers. Graded EX-MT 6 by PSA.
