Christy Mathewson was coming off back-to-back seasons of 30 or more wins when this photo was snapped in 1907. His clean living and impeccable record as the New York Giants ace pitcher made Mathewson the first superstar ballplayer that kids could look up to as a role model. Matty would win 24 games in 1907 and then record his best season the next year with 37 wins with a microscopic 1.43 ERA.
This stunning photograph by the Paul Thompson agency captures Mathewson warming up before a 1907 game. Measuring 6 1/2” x 8 1/2” this Type 1 photo shows edge wear and rounded corners on its white edges and nice toning from age. The reverse has the Paul Thompson stamping along with some glue and water residue. The photo has been authenticated Type 1 by PSA/DNA.
