Absolutely gorgeous and super rare 1906 Athens Intercalated Olympic Games United States Olympic Committee badge is presented here. Also known as the 1906 Intermediate Games these games were very successful as they were not stretched out over several months or interrupted by a World’s Fair. At the time they were considered Olympic Games and called the "Second International Olympic Games in Athens" by the International Olympic Committee. There were no earlier U.S. Olympic Committee badges issued so this represents the first set/series for an Olympic Games.

The badge measures 27 by 35 mm and weighs 11.5 grams. Unsure of composition but appears to be gold-plated silver or bronze. Medal is attached to its attractive original gold and blue ribbon and crossbar marked “OFFICIAL” with an overall length of 8.5 cm. Obverse has raised relief image of eagle holding the American and Greek flags with the AAU emblem underneath and “Olympic Games 1906” in raised lettering above. Reverse engraved “Compliments of Jas. E. Sullivan Sec’y American Olympic Committee” and stamped by maker Dieges & Clust of New York. Small vertical tear to ribbon but it does not take away from aesthetic beauty. Near Mint condition overall incredibly well-preserved for its age.

Sullivan was one of the founders of the Amateur Athletic Union in 1888 serving as secretary from 1889–1906 and president from 1906–09. A truly scarce and ornate badge presented by one of the most influential people in the early Olympic movement.
