This ancient 1908 London Olympics Umpire's Medal is the same design as the athlete participation medals presented at the Games of the IV Olympiad. It is made of gilt silver and is 51 mm in diameter weighing 60 grams. The obverse has a Greek four-horsed chariot with two men side by side the driver and the judge who is ready to reward the winning athlete a victory palm. The reverse is a winged figure of Fame standing on a globe between the Olympic legend. The innovative designs of both the participation and winners medals at these Games are the work of Bertram Mackennal. Two of his designs were used in later Olympics. His name is engraved on the reverse.
This medal was originally presented to A.T Heelas an Umpire for the cycling events on July 16th 1908. His name is engraved on the rim along with the word "UMPIRE." The minter "VAUGHTON" is also engraved on the rim. It comes in an original 1908 London Olympic Games blue presentation case intended for an Olympic Committee Member's medal. The case itself is a rarity and adds significant value to the lot. Any 1908 London participation medal would fit nicely in the velvet purple interior. These two items were sold together at auction recently for over $1000. Medal presents NM and case comes in EX condition.
