Swedish-born Carl Horner (1864-1926) was the premier baseball photographer in turn-of-the-century Boston and his images are most renowned today for having appeared in so many important tobacco-card issues"”including of course the T206 set with the famous holy-grail Honus Wagner. Card collectors will surely recognize the portraits seen here. Hall of Famers Cy Young and Jimmy Collins are situated at 10 o'clock and in the central square respectively. Featured as well are Bill Dinneen Freddy Parent Buck Freeman and Chick Stahl. Horner's name captions the Collins photo and also shows up in the lower right in a calligraphy style that suits the surrounding elegance of background flourishes and baseball designs. It is difficult to say enough about the ultra-high level of preservation. Apart from insignificant surface toning on the rightmost six inches culminating in the bottom-right corner there is virtually no other apparent wear to the 17-1/4" x 21-1/4"piece. None of the scrapes abrasions dings creases and tears that one expects with a century-old paper collectible. Plus the clarity and brightness is exceptional. Obviously this rare beauty has benefitted from decades of ideal storage having been protected from the adverse elements of time and environment. A summary of player identification is as follows: Outer square starting at upper left going clockwise: Jake Stahl Candy LaChance Hobe Ferris Freddy Parent Duke Farrell Jack O'Brien Norwood Gibson Chick Stahl Lou Criger George Winter Long Tom Hughes; Inner square starting at upper left going clockwise: Cy Young Bill Dineen Patsy Dougherty Buck Freeman; Center: Jimmy Collins.
