In the world of baseball photographer Carl Horner is known for his landmark portrait of Honus Wagner"”yes that portrait: the one that appears on the most famous baseball card ever. Wagner's photographer however was no one-hit wonder. The Swedish-born Horner (1864-1926) was a productive portrait specialist who arrived in Boston in the 1880s and quickly established himself as the era's most noteworthy and celebrated baseball photographer. Carl Horner's expertly rendered studio portraits of the men populating the Dead Ball game served as the template for much of the tobacco and candy card issues of the day most notably the Wagner image that appears upon the most coveted and valuable trading card in the collecting hobby. That unmistakable image appears here as well among sixteen photo portraits that comprise this fantastic composite celebrating the National League Champions. The display's titling "Pittsburg National League 1904 Champions" actually refers to the club's 1903 pennant win. At the time teams were considered "Champions" until another club assumed their reign as occurred in the first World Series a year prior against Cy Young's Boston Red Sox. The historical importance of this item is only matched by its stunning aesthetics. The composite image itself measures 16-3/4 x 20-3/4" on a cabinet-style cardboard mount that measures 20" x 24". "Photos by Carl Horner Boston" is printed at lower right. The overall condition is simply astonishing for an item of its age and size. Image quality is clear and uncompromised by any notable wear or blemishes save for a slight degree of darkening at the lower right edge. Vintage pencil notations regarding the items size appear at the bottom center of the mount. Of the few examples of these Horner composites in existence today it is hard to image a finer specimen.
