Ann Meyers helped put women's basketball on the map.In 1976 as a high school player from La Habra California the 5' 9"phenom was the first high schooler ever selected to a U.S. national teamand promptly helped the U.S. Women's Olympic Basketball team win thesilver medal at the Montreal Olympics. She was also the first overallpick in 1979 in the old Women's Professional Basketball League (WPBL)entry draft. Though the league disbanded following the 1980-81 seasonit served as the precursor to today's Women's National BasketballAssociation (WNBA). Nowadays Meyers serves as vice president for thePhoenix Mercury and as a color analyst for the Phoenix Suns televisionbroadcasts. She is currently in Rio de Janerio doing broadcast work for the USA Women's team at the 2016 Olympic Games.
This lot presents six single game-worn shoes from six WNBA players three of whom are considered among the top 15 players ever. Lisa Leslie is one of the greatest women's basketball players of all-time and certainly the most accomplished at the center position. She played her entire 12-year career with the Los Angeles Sparks (1997-2009) winning two WNBA titles and three league MVP awards. She also won four Olympic gold medals (1996-2008). Leslie was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2015. Offered is one of her white and red Nike Zoom Max Air size 14 shoes style-matched to the 2000 Sydney Olympics with her uniform No. "9" on the outer heel. "USA" appears over the lace strap. She signed the outside in faded 5-6/10 blue marker. It is properly tagged and dated "4-10-00" inside and shows light use.
Diana Taurasi will someday join Leslie in Springfield when her career is done. She is currently playing in Rio for USA Basketball and aiming for her fourth straight gold medal just like Lisa. Taurasi has spent her entire WNBA career since 2004 with the Phoenix Mercury winning three championships and five scoring titles. The 6'0" guard has also won six Euroleague titles oveseas playing for pro teams in Russia and Turkey. Her offered white blue and red USA basketball size 11 shoe is style-matched to the 2007 FIBA World Championships. She signed the outside in 8/10 black marker with her WNBA uniform No. "3" inscribed. It is properly tagged by Nike with "PROMO SAMPLE 20070727" on the interior and shows light use.
Cappie Pondexter was Taurasi's Phoenix Mercury teammate 2006-09 when they won two WNBA titles together. She is a 7-time All-Star and 2008 gold medal winner voted one of the top 15 players in WNBA history. She sported the offered Nike Zoom 'CP23' white purple and pink sneaker during the 2007 season with the Mercury. The other three shoes are from three of Lisa Leslie's Los Angeles Sparks teammates in the early 2000's: DeLisha Milton Nikki Teasley and Sophia Witherspoon. Each one is signed and inscribed properly tagged (2001-2003) and shoes appropriate game use. Nice collection of single sneakers from six ladies who can flat out ball!
