The late Willie Stargell made his MLB debut with the Pittsburgh Pirates at the end of the 1962 season at the age of 22. His 1963 rookie season was lackluster but he enjoyed much more success the following season his first as an everyday player. Did you know that he hit the first home run at Shea Stadium in the first game ever played in that stadium on April 17 1964? It would be one of 475 round-trippers Stargell launched as a Major Leaguer playing all 21 seasons of his career in the Steel City. A seven-time All-Star selection Stargell would lead the Pirates to a pair of World Series titles in 1971 and ’79 the latter marking his National League MVP season. He was a true leader who led by example and inspired his teammates to greater heights. The indelible impression he left in the hearts and minds of Pittsburgh sports fans is everlasting.

Upon his well-deserved enshrinement in Cooperstown in 1988 the first-ballot Hall of Famer was awarded this impressive 10K gold ring. The top features a large diamond set upon a black stone surrounded by “BASEBALL HALL OF FAME” in raised lettering. The left shank has “STARGELL” on a ribbon name plate above the facade of the Hall of Fame building in Cooperstown. A home plate below reads “THE NATIONAL BASEBALL HALL OF FAME.” The right shank has Stargell’s positions “OF - 1st BASE” on a ribbon above crossed bats ball and diamond. Below that is home plate with “ELECTED 1988” engraved. The inside of the ring is engraved “LG - 10K.” The size 10.5 ring weighs 28 grams comes. This is a fitting crown jewel to honor Pops Stargell’s glorious Hall of Fame career.

Letter of Provenance from Margaret Weller-Stargell.
