A dazzling piece of San Francisco Giants history, this 14-karat gold championship ring was presented to franchise icon Willie Mays to commemorate the Giants' 2010 World Series title, which ended their 56-year championship drought and marked their first title on the west coast.
After compiling a 92-70 regular-season record to win the NL West, the Orange and Black won the first game of the NLDS behind Tim Lincecum's postseason franchise record 14 strikeouts in his historic 1-0 complete-game shutout over the Braves. After knocking off Atlanta, San Francisco took on the favored Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS and prevailed in six hard-fought games to advance to the Fall Classic. Against the AL champion Texas Rangers, Bruce Bochy's boys prevailed in five games for their World Series since 1954 way back when the then 23-year-old Say Hey Kid patrolled centerfield at the Polo Grounds.
The face spells out "SF" in 34 round melee diamonds flanked by two round diamonds and encircled by a bezel of yellow gold with the words "WORLD CHAMPIONS" in raised lettering. All four perimeter sides contain a row of nine round-cut diamonds. One shank has the year "2010" flanking a yellow gold motif of the Golden Gate Bridge. The other shank has "MAYS" across a ribbon over a raised image of the World Series trophy. Within the top of the trophy is an orange Spessartine garnet representing the franchise's first title in San Francisco; at the base of the trophy are five diamonds representing the Giants' five New York titles. Engraved within the interior band are the club's three 2010 postseason series results: "SFG 3 - ATL 1, SFG 4 - PHI 2, SFG 4 - TEX 1.” Also stamped inside the band is “TIFFANY & CO. 585” identifying its 14-karat gold content (58.5% pure gold; 41.5% alloy). Boasting a grand total of 77 diamonds, the size 12.5 ring weighs 84 grams and remains in outstanding condition with light wear. It comes complete with its original black lacquered presentation box (NM-MT), the lid gold-embossed with the 2010 World Champions crest, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the date of the clinching victory, "November 1, 2010".
As the MLB leader in career regular season wins (11,664 and counting), Giants World Series rings from the early 2010's Bochy/Buster dynasty are highly coveted among collectors, and this is the title that broke the 56-year drought. Built around a dominant starting rotation of Lincecum, Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner, NL Rookie of the Year (and future Hall of Famer) Buster Posey, and colorful characters "The Beard" (Brian Wilson) and "Kung Fu Panda" (Pablo Sandoval), this close-knit group captured the hearts of Giants fans everywhere and set the tone for a winning culture that would bring World Series trophies to the City by the Bay in three consecutive even years (2010, 2012 and 2014).
Originating from Willie Mays' personal collection with a Mays Collection certificate of authenticity, this extravagant ring holds provenance that few championship rings can match, offering collectors the rare chance to own a tangible piece celebrating a storied franchise's long-awaited return to glory and the legacy of arguably the greatest baseball player of all time.
