The late Walter Alston managed the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers for 23 straight seasons starting in 1954. As a major league manager he led the Dodgers to seven National League pennants and four World Series championships. His 1955 Dodgers squad was the only World Series championship team while the club was in Brooklyn; they clinched the N.L. pennant earlier in the calendar year than any previous pennant winner in league history. Alston retired with more than 2000 career wins and managed N.L. All-Star teams to seven victories. He was selected as Manager of the Year six times.
This lot features the Bill Slocum Memorial Award that Alston received in 1977 the year after he retired from Major League Baseball. Presented by the New York Chapter Baseball Writers Association of America the impressive plaque cites Alston for his "High Contribution to Baseball Over A Long Period." The engraved inscription is on a diamond shape with two bats crossing and a baseball positioned right in the middle. The entire display is oval shaped and measures approximately 11" wide X 13" tall. It was presented to Alston at the Annual Baseball Writers Dinner in New York City the major awards banquet for sportswriters that's held every year.
