Following the dreaded Black Sox scandal of 1919 where eight Chicago White Sox players were banned from baseball for life for intentionally throwing games during the World Series in exchange for money from gamblers White Sox star center fielder petitioned MLB Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis for possible reinstatement. Jackson who batted .375 and played flawlessly in the field during the 1919 Fall Classic versus the Cincinnati Reds argued that he never actually was a willing participant in the fix. Nevertheless his petition fell flat as Landis denied it in a letter back to Jackson dated June 20 1923. In the signed type-written letter sent via registered mail Landis wrote: I have received your letter dated June 12 purporting to come from you and to bear your signature. In substance it is an application for reinstatement. The signature thereto does not appear to be yours; therefore beyond this communication to you no action will be taken thereon. This lot features the very envelope in which the letter from Landis was delivered to Jackson.

The aged envelope which measures 6.25 wide by 3.75 high originated from BASEBALL Office of the Commissioner 122 South Michigan Avenue CHICAGO and shows serious toning to go along with its ripped open left side. It was sent via registered mail (DELIVER ONLY TO ADDRESSEE) to Mr. Joe Jackson Bastrop La. with three four-cent stamps on the top right corner. Its registered mail number was 828089. The envelope was stamped leaving Chicago on June 21 1923. This came from a collection of correspondence auctioned off previously by Christies in 1998.
