Shoeless Joe Jackson was a standout center fielder for the Chicago White Sox in the early 1900s. His name became synonymous with the infamous Black Sox scandal of 1919 in which eight members of the American League Champion White Sox including Jackson were banned from baseball for fixing games in exchange for money from gamblers. There are no known autographs of Jackson as he was illiterate and simply signed his name to all baseball contracts using an X. This lot features a hand-written note from Jacksons widow Katie Jackson who took the time to respond to collectors autograph requests for Joe Jackson's signature even after he passed away. Written on July 1 1954 to a Mr. Fred Arnold in Long Island New York Mrs. Jackson wrote: Mr. Jackson passed away December 1951. I will be glad to autograph your ball if that will help you. She signed it "Mrs. Joe Jackson" and even included her mailing address in Greenville South Carolina. A very personal piece of rare Americana memorabilia connected to one of baseballs greatest players who does not reside in Cooperstown.
