The great Tony Gwynn affectionately known as Mr. Padre due to his 20-year big league commitment to the San Diego ball club registered a total of 3141 hits during the course of his Hall of Fame tenure. This lot features a game-used base from the final game of his prolific career: October 7 2001 versus the visiting Colorado Rockies. The game which ended in a 14-5 decision for the Rockies saw Gwynn step in as a pinch-hitter in the bottom of the ninth inning. He grounded out to shortstop for the last out of his MLB career to finish his final season with a .324 batting average. Coincidentally it is also a base from fellow Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson's 3000th-hit game. The rubber base which shows plenty of game wear includes a specially designed Tony Gwynn silhouetted logo on the top showing his years of service (1982 to 2001) to Major League Baseball as well as the Padres. Two of the four sides of the base show Gwynns uniform No. 19 while the remaining two sides show the MLB logo and the Padres team logo respectively. Gwynn signed the top of the base in black marker which has faded over time. The base represents the end of one of the greatest careers ever in National League history.
