Signed out of NYU in 1960 Satch Sanders joined the Boston Celtics where he became an indispensable part of eight NBA championship teams. In fact Sanders is one of just three NBA players to have an 8-0 record in the Finals. After he retired in 1973 Sanders became the head coach for Harvard University the first African-American to hold that position in any sport for an Ivy League institution. Sanders returned to the Celtics in 1977 as Boston’s head coach and later founded the Rookie Transition Program aimed at helping young players adjust to life in the NBA. To top off his distinguished career Sanders was enshrined in the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011 joining teammates Bill Russell Sam Jones John Havlicek Tom Heinsohn K.C. Jones Frank Ramsey Bob Cousy and Bill Sharman. This is the Induction Trophy presented to Satch upon his entering the Naismith Hall of Fame in 2011. The 19½ inch tall trophy features a stylized basketball atop a stylized finial. Embossed on its base is “NAISMITH MEMORIAL BASKETBALL HALL OF FAME ENSHRINEE.” “SATCH SANDERS” is stamped on a brass plate affixed to the side of the base. The trophy shows just light wear from display. A unique piece acknowledging the career of the man whom ranks number three on the all-time list of most NBA championships won. LOA from Satch Sanders.
