From 1983 to 1897 a 25-mile bike race was held each year in southern California pitting the best teams of cyclists against one another. This is the trophy commemorating the inaugural bike race in 1893 that was held on June 1st in San Diego. Standing 21 tall and weighing nine pounds the impressive metal trophy with its detachable top includes a cyclist and his bike on top with very ornate decorative designs throughout. The center of the trophy includes special engraving in three different areas. The first reads: Challenge Trophy for 25 Mile Team Race. The second passage reads: Presented by the East Side Cycling Club First Annual Meet 1893. And the third callout reads: For Competition Under the Auspices of So. Cal. Div. L.A.W. On the very base of the trophy is a special plaque that includes the four names of the winning team: The Los Angeles Wheelmen Phil Kitchen Wm. Jenkins Tom McAleer and Emil Ulbricht.Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
