When it came to playing professional womens tennis in the 1970s one name stood out from all the rest: Billie Jean King. An incredible singles and double player King went on to win 39 Grand Slam titles between 1961 and 1979 including a record 20 Wimbledon titles (including singles titles in 1966 67 68 72 73 and 75). She also won 13 U.S. titles (including four singles) four French titles (one singles) and two Australian titles (one singles). This custom-made tennis outfit was made by legendary fashion designer Ted Tinling and worn by King during the second half of her jaw-dropping career. A tag on the inside of the outfit reads: Made Especially for You by Ted Tinling. The red-and-white two-piece outfit is a polyester/nylon blend and comes complete with oversized white collars and special embroidery across both the front and back of the outfit that repeatedly spells out her initials: BJK. Both the B and J are stitched in light yellow while the K is finished off in gray. Off the court King fought for equal prize money for men and women and in 1971 became the first female athlete to win more than $100000. This campaign for equality is most notably remembered by her 1973 Battle of the Sexes match against 55-year-old former mens tennis champ Bobby Riggs who claimed the womens game to be inferior. The match drew considerable publicity and before a worldwide television audience of nearly 50 million King beat Riggs in straight sets: 6-4 6-3 6-3.Includes a Letter of Provenance from the Helms Athletic Foundation/LA84 Collection.
