ADDENDUM: The catalog lot heading has been corrected. The artist of this painting is actually Kadir Nelson, not Richard Cullen.

The late, great Ted Williams, the Red Sox slugger who crushed 521 home runs during his prolific career in Boston, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1966. A two-time American League MVP, Williams won six batting titles while patrolling left field at Fenway Park and led the Red Sox to the 1946 World Series. His single-season batting average of .406, which he set in 1941, has never been eclipsed.

The lot features a massive, original five-foot wide by six-foot high oil-on-canvas painting by noted sports artist Kadir Nelson. Framed on stretcher board, it was on display at the San Diego Hall of Champions because Williams was a native San Diegan and a former high school classmate of the museum's curator, the late Bob Breitbard. The painting shows a very tanned Williams kneeling in the batter's box at Fenway awaiting his turn at bat. A consummate student of the game when it came to honing his hitting skills, Williams' dedication to his craft can be seen in his eyes as he stares down yet another pitch thrown by the opposing hurler.

Includes Letter of Provenance from the San Diego Hall of Champions.
