Baseball Hall of Famer the late Ted Williams played his entire MLB career with the Boston Red Sox and captured seven American League batting titles during his illustrious 18-year tenure in the big leagues. This lot features a game worn 1950's Boston Red Sox cap attributed to the 'Splendid Splinter.’ From 1950 to '59 which included active military duty for portions of the 1952 and '53 seasons Williams launched 227 of his 521 career home runs. The cap comes from the personal collection of the late Bob Breitbard the former curator and president of the San Diego Hall of Champions. Breitbard was a former classmate of Williams at San Diego’s Herbert Hoover High School in the mid-1930s.
The aged Navy blue cap remains in remarkably good condition despite its 60-plus years. This six-panel cap manufactured by Tim McAuliffe Inc. features a red embroidered “B” on the front and a blue button on the top of the crown. Heavy sweat stains are present on the bill and two small moth-eaten holes can be seen on the back and left side. This is an incredible relic of baseball history from a player whose reputation includes being “the greatest hitter who ever lived.”
