The summer of 1927 found the Yankees stomping their way to their second consecutive American League pennant. Babe Ruth was in the midst of hitting his record 60 home runs and that Fall would see the Yanks sweeping the Pirates for the first of their back-to-back World Championships. Though the Babe received the bulk of the press that summer, hard-hitting first baseman Lou Gehrig was emerging as a rival to the Bambino. This photo quietly illustrates the stark contrast in Ruth and Gehrig’s personalities. While most photos of the Babe show him with a big, expressive grim, this photo perfectly captures Gehrig’s shyer and more serious demeanor. The photo caption on the reverse does not give a hint to the date this photo was taken, but we do know that it was used on the cover of the August 6, 1927, edition of the Police Gazette. 1927 could be considered Gehrig’s breakout season as he batted .373 with 47 homers and led the league in doubles, RBI, and total bases to win his first MVP Award. This photograph was later used in several different publications such as the cover of the aforementioned August 6, 1927, Police Gazette and the 1928 Sporting News Record Book which is featured in lot 55336 in this auction. This sensational photo measures in at app 6x8 has been printed to its edge and shows some light edgewear and surface scuffs. The reverse of the photo has the Underwood & Underwood stamping along with the photo caption and various handwritten production notations. The photo has been encapsulated and graded a Type 1 by PSA. This photo was used on the 1928 cover of 'The Sporting News' record book featured in this auction in Lot 379.
