Ticket and program collectors! Enjoy this highly desirable ticket stub and program combo from the game in which Roberto Clemente recorded his 3,000th and final MLB regular season hit. The Puerto Rican legend played all 18 seasons (1955-72) in a Pittsburgh Pirates uniform and is widely regarded as the greatest right fielder in baseball history. His background as a javelin thrower contributed to his powerful arm that helped him earn him 12 Gold Gloves. Clemente won four National League batting titles, two World Series for his beloved Pirates, and finished his career with a .317 batting average and 240 home runs. Deeply committed to charitable work, this Latin American hero was killed in a plane crash on December 31, 1972, while delivering aid to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
On September 30, 1972 (just three months before his death), Clemente reached the 3,000-hit milestone in front of Pittsburgh’s home crowd at Three Rivers Stadium. After striking out in his first at-bat against New York Mets starter Jon Matlack, he doubled to right-center in the fourth inning to spark a rally that led to a 5-0 Pirates victory. It turned out to be Clemente’s final regular season at-bat as Bill Mazeroski pinch hit for Roberto in the fifth inning. The 1.25” by 3.25” yellow ticket stub the Pirates logo was issued for the “Terrace Reserved Fifth Level” and cost $3.15 back then. The bottom is neatly perforated, and overall condition is sharp, super clean and crease-free for a solid PSA EX 5 grade. The current population lists just three other EX 5s with only one graded higher, making this one of the finest examples money can buy.
The included program entitled "World Champion Pittsburgh Pirates 1972 Official Scorebook/Three Rivers Stadium” contains 40 pages and has Roberto Clemente on the cover. The 9/30/1972 milestone game has been scored in blue ballpoint pen with "#3,000" and an arrow marking Clemente's final hit. The 8.25” by 10.75” program remains in excellent condition. Together, the ticket stub and program provide a wonderful tribute to Clemente's historic achievement.
