It was the “perfect” Father’s Day for Phillies pitcher Jim Bunning. The big league veteran and father of seven held the New York Mets hitless and off the basepaths for the entirety of the June 21, 1964, day game at Shea Stadium. Inning after inning, Bunning methodically mowed down the Mets. Though it is an unwritten law of baseball not to make mention of a perfect game or no-hitter while it is underway, Bunning had no such superstitions. “C’mon, dive, do something out there. Let’s get this perfect game!” he repeated called out to his teammates behind him, encouraging their best play. The pitcher even helped his own cause with a two-run double in the sixth. By the eighth inning, even the rowdy New York bleacherites were cheering for the enemy pitcher. Unlike today, where it is “unsporting” to break up a no-no, Mets manager Casey Stengel threw everything he could at Bunning, trying to spoil his masterpiece. The last two Mets batters sent to the plate were pinch hitters, but Bunning struck them both out to wrap up his perfect game – the first one in the National League since 1880. This is a field level box ticket stub to that historic game.
The ticket is in very good condition with the expected perforation tear, slightly rounded corners, and light surface staining from age. The yellow and blue ink remains bright and displays nicely. The ticket has been encapsulated by PSA and graded VG3.
