Offered here is a compelling pair of vintage soccer programs featuring Pelé with the Brazil National Team and Santos FC, spanning a pivotal three-year window at the heart of Brazil's back-to-back World Cup dynasty.
The first is the official A.D.E.M. program (Estádio do Maracanã, Ano I, No. 11) from the Brazil vs. Chile "Copa Bernardo O'Higgins" match on September 17, 1959, at the legendary Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro. From 1955 to '66, the Copa Bernardo O'Higgins was an annual two-legged football tournament between Brazil and Chile. It was similar to other two-team ritual tournaments in that period such as the Roca Cup between Brazil and Argentina. Brazil dominated the first leg on this day with a resounding 7-0 thrashing as Pelé tallied a hat trick. The second leg, played three days later in Santiago, was a 1-0 win by Brazil.
The front cover features the A.D.E.M. masthead with the Olympic rings above, and the bold match designation in large black lettering. The lower half carries a large team photograph of the 1958 World Champion Brazilian squad with 17-year-old Pelé crouched in the front row. Interior pages, printed in Portuguese and Spanish, include editorial content welcoming the Chilean squad, photographs of Rio and Christ the Redeemer, the Chilean national team photo, and a tribute to the cup's namesake Bernardo O'Higgins, the Chilean military officer and statesman who led Chili to its independence from Spain in the early 1800's.
The second program is the official Sheffield Wednesday game day program from a prestigious October 22, 1962 friendly match against Santos FC billed as "Brazilian & South American Champions" at Hillsborough Stadium. It marked Pelé's first every match in England. A crowd of 49,058 watched as Pelé scored a penalty and Coutinho netted a hat-trick, with all goals coming in the first half. The striking blue-and-cream cover features an aerial view of the stadium. Interior pages include the full starting lineup with Pelé listed at #10 alongside Gilmar, Mauro, Zito, Coutinho, Lima, Dorval, Calvet, Dalmo, Olavo, and Pepe, plus a detailed "World Famous Santos — And Pelé" editorial feature and a Peter Lorenzo column profiling the squad individually.
Both programs present with age-appropriate toning and wear consistent with their respective eras.
