It would be tough to come up with a better example of a pitcher’s complete dominance in one season than what Dodgers ace Sandy Koufax did in 1963. He started the season by pitching the second “immaculate inning” (striking out three batters on nine pitches) of his career on April 19th, becoming only the second pitcher in MLB history to do so. He gave Dodgers fans a scare a week later when he injured his shoulder, missing two weeks. Sandy came off the DL better than ever, throwing his second career no-hitter. He started July by pitching 33 consecutive scoreless innings. He wound up the season by winning the Triple Crown, leading the league with 25 wins, 306 strikeouts, and a minuscule earned run average of 1.88. He was named both the NL MVP and Cy Young Award winner and capped off the year by winning two World Series games and breaking the old record for most strikeouts in a game with 15. He added a fourth trophy to his cabinet when he was named the World Series MVP.
