Perhaps no coach in the history of the NBA so shaped a franchise than Red Auerbach. From his first season with Boston in 1950 Red made basketball history by drafting the first African-American player. He methodically assembled a team that would eventually dominate the young league winning eight consecutive Championships. It was under Red’s guidance that Sam Jones became a Hall of Fame shooting guard and it is from his collection that these two Auerbach items come from. The first piece is a Spalding basketball that commemorates the history of the Celtics franchise. Auerbach has signed the front panel in black marker personalizing it to Jones. The second piece is a finely sculpted statuette of Red cigar in hand sitting on the team bench. “The Celtics are a team and way of life” is inscribed on its base. Both pieces derive from Sam Jones’ personal collection and show the esteem the Hall of Famer held his old coach.
