Addendum: This is not the football Woodson intercepted and returned for a touchdown to break the record; rather it was used in that game. Minimum bid has been updated accordingly.
On Dec. 2 2001 the Baltimore Ravens outlasted the visiting Indianapolis Colts by the score of 39-27. Baltimore’s victory was settled when cornerback Rod Woodson intercepted a Peyton Manning pass and returned it 47 yards for a touchdown with 1:34 remaining. The INT returned for a touchdown set a new NFL record as it marked the 10th of Rod’s career. The Wilson official NFL (Tagliabue) leather football is signed and inscribed by Woodson on a back panel in bold 9/10 black marker. The inscription“12 Interception Returned FOR TD NFL Record vs Indy 2001 Dec 2nd" is misleading for two reason. First it reads like this ball is the one he caught and took to the house for the record-breaker. It was simply used in the game. (We already sold the actual interception ball and gloves he wore for the play in our 2015 Spring Auction). In addition the pick-six was on 12/2/01 was the 10th of Woodson’s career. He would add two more in 2002 as a member of the Oakland Raiders to finish his career with 12. He remains alone at the top with the recently retired Charles Woodson second at 11. All things considered a terrific game-used and autographed football from the personal collection of one of the greatest defensive backs in NFL history who is enshrined in Canton as a Steeler.
