The late Rick Ferrell was a major league catcher for 18 seasons playing from 1929 to 1947 for three different teams: the St. Louis Browns the Boston Red Sox and the Washington Senators. At the time of his retirement he owned the American League record for games caught behind the plate with 1806 a mark that stood until Carlton Fisk broke it in 1988. A career .281 hitter Ferrell topped the .300 plateau in four different seasons and was inducted into Cooperstown in 1984.

This lot features Ferrell's 1968 Detroit Tigers World Series 14K Gold Championship ring. Years after his Hall of Fame playing career ended Ferrell was still working in baseball. At the time the '68 Tigers outlasted the NL Champion St. Louis Cardinals in a hotly contested seven-game Fall Classic Ferrell was working as the Tigers' general manager and vice president (1959 to '74). The ring sports a large diamond positioned at the center of a baseball diamond atop a black stone surrounded by raised lettering reading "DETROIT TIGERS WORLD CHAMPIONS". One shank reads "FERRELL" with raised old English "D" and crossed bats while the other shank reads "1968" with raised images of the Tigers logo and ball in glove. The inside of the band is stamped "BP 14K". Ferrell's ring comes in size 9 1/2 and shows minimal wear having been preserved in near perfect condition in its original Balfour presentation box. An incredible piece of Detroit Tigers history marking the team's third World Series title.

Includes LOA from the Ferrell Family.
