The great Billy Williams was a star right out of the gate for the Chicago Cubs. An outfielder for much of his 18-year MLB career Williams also played first base on occasion and made his presence felt early on as he was named the National League Rookie of the Year in 1961 after batting .278 with 25 home runs and 86 runs batted in. Williams would play 16 seasons with the Cubs before ending his big league career with the Oakland A’s in 1975 and ’76. This lot features Williams’ 1967 Chicago Cubs game worn home jersey a campaign in which he batted .278 (again) and finished with 28 home runs the seventh of 13 consecutive seasons of 20 or more round-trippers. This was the very jersey that “Sweet Swinging Billy” wore while roaming left field at the friendly confines of Wrigley during the long hot summer of ‘67.
The home white pinstripe flannel has the famous “Cubs” circle patch on the left chest and size “40” Wilson tagging with washing instructions sewn on the left front tail. A white strip tag with “26-67 Set 2” chain-stitched in black is sewn inside the collar indicating his uniform number season and set number. The left sleeve is adorned with the popular “Cubbie Bear” face patch. The back has Williams’ number “26” in Cubs royal blue which shows ample signs of puckering and fraying through the years. Numbers and patches are all-original. All seven original buttons down the front are intact. Overall the jersey exhibits excellent evidence of game use. Pitting is evident from repeated laundering. What a terrific gamer from one of the greatest players and fan favorites in Chicago history to ever don a Cubs jersey! It should be noted that in our last auction we sold a 1968 Billy Williams home jersey for $26635--and that one was graded A9!
Includes letter from MEARS graded perfect A10.
